Casaoliewinning (Oil Extraction House II), 2023. Pseudomimetic archive (Series). Oil on linen, 45 cm × 50 cm. The image, sourced from the National Archives of the Netherlands, is identified as the school for the children of American employees of the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, Inc., in Anaco, Venezuela. It features the same architectural design as the house for oil workers and employees where I grew up—in Campo Venezuela, on the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo—which was built by Royal Dutch Shell around 1945. I appropriate the image and reinterpret it, adding color and incorporating figures. This historiographical revision—stemming from the perspective of the national archive of my country of residence (NL) regarding my country of origin (VE), as well as my own perspective—seeks to problematize notions of national identity, questioning concepts of otherness, colonialism, and the contemporary history of Venezuela as it relates to oil as an essential resource.
