Backyard Well Horse, 2023. Pseudomimetic archive (Series). Oil on linen, 45 cm × 50 cm. The paintings function as a pseudomimetic archive: an archive that appears objective but, in reality, incorporates personal interpretations, fictions, and interventions that challenge the notion of documentary truth and what an archive chooses to show. For this painting, I chose a rather warm palette with a particularly yellow light, reflecting the fresh memory of my last visit to Venezuela about three years ago, when everything looked worn and corroded. I used to find these pumpjacks right in front of my house.
